The post clerk didn't even say anything about it and I didn't think about it until hrs after I mailed off the package. What will happen to that package, will they open it in customs? will they put in a value and make my relatives pay some outrageous fee???

I don't know how I overlooked that! I hate the USPS!!

why didn't the clerk say "look you didn't fill out this form completely"

Oh well it's my fault. I just want to know what will happen because of my mistake???

  1. The goods will be held in customs 'pending documentation'. The documentation required will be an invoice. for obviously cheaper items, your relatives may be allowed to bring an invoice or to indicate a value. Once that value can be verified in some way (at the officers' discretion), your relative can just pay the prescribed duty and recieve the goods.

The only difference if you put the information in the form, would be that your relatives would have less paper work to do on this side. Customs would probably still hold it anyway.

    EDIT:

When shipping goods into jamaica (as opposed to carrying it with you when you are on a flight) it doesnt matter if it is 'a gift'. If duty is applicable on the item (based on the tarif specification), it will have to be paid anyway.  The officer has some discretion, but the word 'gift' doesnt protect you from anything!

  2. oh don't worry too much about that, cuz the JA side will open your document or package and surely make any custom fee determination they feel is right or maybe email any info you wanted to put on the invoice to your folks and they can show customs, in case of any conflicts.  unless you put the contents down as a gift you will probably have to pay duty.  but if you do say it is a gift than you can collect no insurance if lost or stolen.  a double edge sword that is!
