  1. Two weeks ago I visited the National Aviary in Pittsburgh, PA.

I pruchased a booklet "Helping Orphaned or Injured Birds"

    STANDBY - I am reading i it

OK - basically it says that most times humans interfere when not necessary.  Leave the bird where it is and protect from predators if possible. Watch to see if parent(s) are observing baby.

for more info, email me and i will type the entire thing.

  2. If it has feathers it is a fledgling (learning to fly) leave it were it is the parents are still taking care of it.  If you have moved it put it back the parents will not abandon it because of your smell bird have a very poor sense of smell.   If it does not have feathers look for the nest and return it if you can.  If you can't contact your local wildlife rehaber or if you can't locate one contact fish and game and they can refer you to one.    It is very difficult to care for a baby bird and chances are if you don't know what you are doing it will die.   It is also illegal for you to keep it even to release without proper permits

  3. If the bird is fully feathered, it is most likely a fledgling and has left the nest on it's own and it's parents are caring for it. It is normal for birds to leave the nest before they can fly. You need to replace it where you found it..preferably in a scrub or tree so it is relatively safe from predators, and the parents should come back to feed it. If it is unfeathered...then look for a nest and if you can find it...replace it into the nest. Do not worry about your scent being on the chick..birds have a very poorly developed sense of smell and will NOT reject a baby that has been touched. If you cannot find a nest, get the bird to a local wildlife rehab for it's best chance of survival. Also, keep in mind, it is illegal for you to try and raise this bird on your own.If you try, you will likely kill it.  You are not an expert even if you think you are.  Look for a rehab here:

  4. Try to locate the nest and return it to it's mother. It is a myth that once there is human sent on it that the mother will not accept it. If you can not find the nest locate a wild animal rescue in yout area.
