  1. Feed it nothing.  Feeding the wrong food, in the wrong way can kill it.

If you don't know exactly what to do - DO NOTHING.

The nest should be directly above the spot where you found the bird, unless it was moved by a predator, like a cat.

The bird belongs in the nest.  If you cannot find the nest, or if this bird was touched by a cat, find a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.  They are trained, equipped, and the only people who can legally care for this bird.

Check this link for worldwide listings:

In the US, rehabilitation is regulated by the Federal government and State DNR (Dept of Natural Resources), or Dept of Fish and Game. Services are free to the public, as all native wild birds are protected by federal law.

There are several sites with listing of rehabbers, although the easiest way to find one is to search Yahoo! or Google for "wildlife rehabilitation + your state (try both full and abbreviated)". Also search on "DNR rehabilitation + your state".

You may be able to find a contact for a nearby rehabber through your local humane society, animal shelter, or police department.

  2. the mother eats worms, grubs and other small insects.. grinds them up in her crop and regurgitates it/them for the baby.   so the idea is to grind up some meat in a blender to feed it

  3. Please do not try to feed the bird-- you must call your local humane society or Audobon  Society and they will help you.  Where I live we actually have a "bird rescuer" who you can bring found babies and other abandoned birds to.

Do not try to make the bird drink ......the bird most likely will swallow the water and will go down in it's lungs instead of stomach...the same goes for the food.....please call an agency....

If you ever find another bird like that, your best bet is to leave it where it is and watch it...most likely the parents will come and rescue it on their own, and if not, after a few hours you can call the agencies.

  4. If the bird is fully feathered, it is most likely a fledgling and has left the nest on it's own and it's parents are caring for it. It is normal for birds to leave the nest before they can fly.   You need to replace it where you found it..preferably in a scrub or tree so it is relatively safe from predators, and the parents should come back to feed it.  If it is unfeathered...then look for a nest and if you can find it...replace it into the nest.  Do not worry about your scent being on the chick..birds have a very poorly developed sense of smell and will NOT reject a baby that has been touched.  If you cannot find a nest, get the bird to a local wildlife rehab for it's best chance of survival.  Also, keep in mind, it is illegal for you to try and raise this bird on your own.  Look for a rehab here:
