  1. First of all:

I was probally abandoned by the mother or fell out of the nest.

    Second of all:

if you put it back in the wild before it can fly it will be killed

Third of All: Can you put it back in the nest?

Forth of all: according to the law if you keepa wild animal for more than 3 or 7 days (not sure) then you HAVE to keep it forever! So I hope you enjoy your new pet!

Notes/Tips: You can feed it worms and find out what it drinks (maybe try water) And the try to wean it on bird food! Play with it daily so it is not mean! Take it to the vet to finf out it's gender, if it is healthy, and if it has siminilla because there is a siminilla scare going around. If it bites the boys hurt less. It will probally need a bird cage! If you need to talk to a vet then call: (919)-844-9166

  2. You are thinking correctly.  Do you know where the nest is located?  If so, you can place the baby back into its nest, or create a substitute nest (much like you already have) made from a small wicker bowl or strawberry basket.  Place it as close as possible to the original nest.  Observe from a safe distance for a couple of hours to make sure the parents are returning to feed it.  Also, keep an eye out to ensure the baby is not placed in direct sunlight.  It is an old wives tale that you cannot touch a bird and return it to its nest.  Most birds do not have a keen sense of smell.  If the bird is fully feathered, check the area to see if the parents are nearby.  Songbirds that are fully feathered most likely have fledged the nest and will not return to it.  They often remain unflighted for a few days and the parents will continue to care for them.  If the parents do not return or are not in the area, contact a local federally permitted songbird rehabilitator.  Good luck!

  3. If the bird is fully feathered, it is most likely a fledgling and has left the nest on it's own and it's parents are caring for it. It is normal for birds to leave the nest before they can fly.   You need to replace it where you found it..preferably in a scrub or tree so it is relatively safe from predators, and the parents should come back to feed it.  If it is unfeathered...then look for a nest and if you can find it...replace it into the nest.  Do not worry about your scent being on the chick..birds have a very poorly developed sense of smell and will NOT reject a baby that has been touched.  If you cannot find a nest, get the bird to a local wildlife rehab for it's best chance of survival.  Also, keep in mind, it is illegal for you to try and raise this bird on your own.  Look for a rehab here:

  4. If the bird is feathered - it's a fledgling.

Feed it nothing. Please put it back in the area where you found it, under a shrub (or in the low branches), in the shade and leave it alone. The parents will care for it - they know exactly what and how to feed their chicks.

Baby birds leave the nest (fledge), before they can fly. The jump, fall and tumble to the ground - it's natural.

Fledglings learn to fly from the ground. While they are on the ground, the parents continue to feed and protect them.

This bird needs it's parents. You cannot teach it the essential skills needed to survive in the wild. Every second you have it in your hands you risk imprinting the bird, further reducing it's chance of survival.

Please put it back immediately, and leave the area so the parents can return.

Do not worry about the parents rejecting the chick. 99.9% of all birds have a poor sense of smell. Birds cannot smell humans and will not abandon a chick that has been touched.

Having the bird in your home is illegal. All native wild birds are protected by federal law in the US and Canada, and most other developed countries. You cannot have them in your possession, unless you have a specific wildlife license that allows you to do so.

  5. Call the vet immediately, dont touch it and dont leave it alone.
