I found a black lizard with yellow spots in my basement?

I live in Maine and he didn't look like a salamander because he didn't have that "wet" quality like Salamanders do. He looked dry from what I saw. Does anyone know what kind of lizard this is possibly?

If you can't see scales it's a salamander like Jack said. I can't think of any lizards in Maine that look like that.

picture would be helpful but a yellow spotted night lizard might be it.

The only species native to Maine that matches your description is the Spotted Salamander.

There are no lizards native to Maine.
