I found a female dog walking along the road today... could she be pregnant?

I was diving and noticed a female dog walking aimlessly down the road. I gave her some food and coaxed her into the car. She is VERY thin and ate like she had never eaten before. When you pet her you can feel her spine, ribs, and hips. But I got her home and fed her and gave her water. Her belly is a bit saggy, but I figured that she had pups in the past. Her **** aren't completely full and heavy. But she is really thin.. i checked her nipples and she is lactating.....Could she be pregnant? I would have thought if she had pups that she wouldn't go too far from her nesting site and she wouldn't got in the car....

Any ideas?

  1. she may very well have a litter of pups out there somewhere wondering what happened to their mommy, but she went with you in hopes of a good meal.. probably thinking she could eat and come back to her babies

or something could have happened to her pups (hit by car.. wild animal.. etc) and then of course, there is always the possibility that she is pregnant or going through a false pregnancy

you should really take her to a vet to get checked out and spayed ...even if she is pregnant, they can still do it (I know it sounds bad.. but it's really better for her, and the puppies wouldn't be ending up in the hands of animal control) and it would take the stress of having a litter of puppies off of her body while she is so weak

  2. She probably just had pups.  She may have been going back to them when you found her.  She sounds like she needs to see a vet.

  3. She may have also weaned a litter, gone thru a false pregnancy, or may have an infection.

Sounds like this dog needs some good vet care!  If she is pregnant it doesnt really sound like she's in good physcial shape to carry a healthy pregnancy.

  4. Sounds like she had puppies and was dumped.Or some one took her puppies away and she went hunting for them,This happens all the time with ignorant people who blame the dog for getting pregnant instead of being a responsible animal owner.I don't think she is PG I think she was and that's part of why she is so skinny.Do not over feed her you can kill a starving dog by allowing them too much food at one time.Small feedings several times a day is the better way to go.Thank you for caring enough to pick her up.God Bless You.Tilks Mom

  5. I don`t think she has had pups, but to be sure get Her a Collar and a Leash and take her back to where you found Her, let Her walk around where she wants as long as She`s on the leash. She might lead you to the puppies if there is any. If you don`t find any then its probably a Lost cause. Take Her to the vet and Get Her checked up on, if She is`int Pregnant get Her fixed. Good Luck!

  6. A sign that she already gave birth is if the hair is gone or the skin around her nipples is red. That is a sure sign that something has been nursing. Give her food slow though too much to fast can be bad. I would consult a vet to see what they recommend. No collar to tell you where her home was??

  7. Yes,she could be pregnant,or she could have a litter of pups somewhere.I would suggest taking her back to where you found her ,on a leash, and see if she might lead you to them. They would be very hungry by now and would probably be crying for her. If she is friendly and was hungry, she would have got into the car, pups or not. If you can't find any pups, then I would take her to a vet to see if she's pregnant. Also, feed her puppy food to get some weight on her.Nice of you to help the poor thing.

  8. Take her back to the site on leash - don't let her go, but let her lead you to pups if she has any.

Take her to the vet asap, he can tell you if she has had pups recently or is pregnant.

Good of you to take her in, I am sure she is due a break by now, poor thing.   Please take good care of her, fate sent her to you, do what you can for her, don't let her be a stray again.

  9. kitty is right it sounds more like shes had pups, and by the sounds of it they arent that old. She might have been out trying to find food enough to feed them. Having pups is a big task it takes a lot of food. If she isnt being fed regularly by who ever or shes a stray then she was getting thin and having to wander farther afield for food. I would search the area you found her for pups. Shes going to need a good food, fed often to get condition back. depending on the pups age, a female can come back into heat shortly after, its not likely she's pregnant again but it could be. It could have been another reason for her wanderings. She was in heat.
