this is an abnormally large caterpillar, it is green with colorful spikey bumbs running down his spine.

ive looked it up it is a cecropian moth caterpillar or a giant silk worm...

the thing is its supposed to be in a cold climate (60-75 degrees)

it was about 95 degrees outside where i found it... it apparently originates from the rockys but whats it doing in north carolina?

i found it near railraod tracks, maybe it hitched a ride???

what should i do?

i currently have it in a controlled habitat around 70 degrees

it is approximately 4 to 5 inches long.

i believe it is beginning its stage into its moth form, it is beggining to wrap silk everywhere in its cage.

any tips would be nice.

  2. Its most likely a Gypsy Moth caterpillar...Let it go they eat trees and ruin nature

  3. Cecropia moths are found all over the United States. They are here in Ohio, and it's hot as heck right now.I think you should let it go. If you want to keep it,you will have to keep the cocoon in the refrigerator until spring,so it will stay dormant, and then gradually warm it up as spring approaches. The moths only live for several days after mating and laying eggs.
