Question:

I found a rock that I suspect may be a meteorite?

Just wondering if anyone has any tips on how to tell for sure. Here are some details:

-It was found in an area that does not have any similar looking native rock

-it is a broken fragment with a dark grey interior that includes small crystals inclusions, one side is glossy brownish-black. looks like a fusion crust to me, but I'm no expert

-it is not magnetic

-about 30 lbs

I have heard that a sure way to tell is to send a sample to a testing facility to check for a certain kind of nickle content. Does anyone have any thoughts as to if it would be worth it do do this? also, is there an official organization that can certify a rock as a mertiorite if I were to sell it

  1. Just don't get scammed, if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is. :)

Do, do it, if it is a new discovery it might be named after you! kewl!

  2. Not all meteorites are magnetic or contain nickle.  Some have high carbon content.

Check out a nearby university to find an expert.

  3. 90% of meteorites *are* magnetic. So most likely you're out of luck. Fusion crusts are very thin, less than 2 mm (one tenth of an inch)
