I found a snake. What kind is it?

okay, so i am in MD.

i go to this place with a really long river. at both sides of the river, there are lots of plants and mossy kind of stuff. i saw something move and when i picked up a snake by its tail. it was slithering around everywhere. the color was light brown with one light white line across the middle. i didnt want to get big because it might have been poisonous. so i let it go. PLEASE TELL ME. and post pics so i can say if it is or not. THANKS SO MUCH!!
