  1. If it's a Morgan dollar in decent condition, it's likely worth between $10 and $20. There's some rare ones that are worth much more.

Quickest place to get an idea of the value of an old coin is to check for similar ones on eBay and see what they're selling for.

  2. Check out Ebay.

but try to hold on to it as long as you can.

    the long the more valuable.

  3. Here are two links that should help you:

Pricing page for Morgan Dollars (your 1889 is a Morgan)

    http://www.pcgs.com/prices/PriceGuideDet...

Info on coin grading ('cause that's a huge determinant of price)

And one thing more... do you know which mint produced your coin?

The mint mark is located on the eagle side, just below the bow ribbon on the wreath... near the bottom of the design. Each mint, except for Philadelphia, had letters for mint marks. It will be either Philadelphia (no mint mark), San Francisco ("S"), New Orleans ("O"), or Carson City ("CC"). The mint the coin came from is another factor in the value of your coin (some are scarcer than others).
