I found a polaroid of my father and mother as a young couple before they had us kids. They have passed now and this is the ONLY photo I have ever seen of my dad as a young guy. Its from like the later 70's, and its all cracked. I wanna blow the photo up to like 8X10 and maybe restore the actual photo. Is this possible? If so where would I get it done at and how much do you think it would cost?

THANKS

  1. YES! This can be done, and a lot of people know how sentimental these family photos are.  It can be restored, but this is a very expensive time consuming job.  You are looking at paying someone anywhere from $30 - $60 an hour, and would probably take minimum 2 hours, and go up from there, depending on how much work needs to be done.

I have done a lot of that type restoration work. If you want me to take a look at the photo and give you more specifics please connect to me and then email a message and I will take a look at it for you.

  2. To answer your question literally... no, I very much doubt that YOU can fix it... however... it can certainly BE fixed. It just takes some real skill with computer photo restoration techniques. Here is a site you need to explore. You take your photo in to a local dealer, such as a Wolf photo center, they will scan it for you, send the digital file to Hollywood Photo Fix, and the restored file will be returned back to the photo store for printing. I would imagine you can get a very good quality 8 x 10 from your photo.

  3. Amazing what you can do yourself with Photoshop. I have restored many old family photographs this way. Some of them dating back to the very early 1900's.

It's a simple matter to scan the image to the correct size. (set your scanner to 300dpi at 10in x 8in). Then with the help of photoshop start fixing the image making the image large on your screen. It is a painstaking job but very satisfying to do. Depending on the damage it will take at least an hour to fix.

  4. You don't want to do anything with the original, so make a high quality digital copy to work with.  If you don't own a high quality scanner, take the original photography to a professional service bureau and have them do it for you.  Since you only want to make the image 8x10, tell that to the service bureau so they can scan it to the proper resolution.  If the image has cracks, they may be able to do some of the art for you (be prepared to pay $50+ per hour).

If you want to do the work yourself, once you have the file, use Photoshop and some of its plug-ins to assist you.
