Question:

I found out that my daughter is incontinent?

If you recall one of my earlier questions, it was about the kegel exercises that my 13 year old daughter should practice for her frequent accidents. Well a week or so after that question, nothing had changed with the kegels so I took her to a urologist and discovered that she is incontinent which means that she cannot make it to the bathroom before she pees (not bowel incontinent. She doesn't have that.) She has been provided medicine for about a month and the doctor gave her a check up on Friday and she is now commanding me to buy her diapers. My daughter is not willing to wear a diaper to school and at home; she is still in disbelief and thinks she can make it to the bathroom, which she and I both know she can't do. Anything I can tell her to change her mind? She is scared and has asked me questions like, "What does one feel like?" which I obviously don't have an answer for. She doesn't want to be sitting in something that is uncomfortable obviously. What do I buy her?

  1. Why not just have her wear a pad?  It can catch the dribbles until she gets to the bathroom.  Much less embarassing than a diaper for a 13 year old!  Also, just suggest she have  a toileting schedule?  Try to get her to go every 2 hours whether she feels the need or not.

  2. I'm sure your daughter's urologiogist has examined her thoroughly and has determined that she needs diapering.  You need to be firm about that.  I suggest that you buy some appropriately-sized disoposable diapers and the other necessary items, such as powder and wipes.

Start by diapering your daughter on a weekend, and let her get accustomed to the feel of the diaper under her clothing.  You nay also wish to have her stay in all weekend and wear the diaper alone, with perhaps a tee shirt and socks or slippers.

Were you in the room during your daughter's examinations?  If so, she probably knows that there is no part of her you haven't seen, so just take your time while you diaper her.  Show her how to apply the diaper, and of course, how to clean herself and use the powder.  Check her for wetness from time to time and she'll get used to it.

  3. do not put her on detrol la!!!!!!!(it numbs the feeling of having to go n causes more problems in kids n teens!)!!!!! my daughter has had this since she was 2. do not believe most of these docs!!! try allergy tests etc-gluten etcc. stay away from harmone foods!! (can preservatives too) my daughters 6th doc gave her furnaiden(sp?) n amoxicalin(sp?) everyday 3 times a day-she became sick 24/7! peed blood etcccc. since starting more gluten free foods n fresh n no harmone foods shes maybe gets a accident once a month. its been about 8 months-wow! docs r mad at me but shes a diff person!!! no more bags/blue under her eyes-no more of her feeling like a baby! no more infections! the list goes on! the docs who gave her detrol la got turned in to giving it to a minor. (health code in state) -my daughters bladder was the shape of a candycane n old pee was stuck at the top-causing infections etc. it was all scar tissue. its took these 8 months but its just about normal. i tried everything for years-this worked. give her a watch or set phone for every hour to go pee. try a natural stool softener (foods) n the pads are better than a diaper-those docs should know better! some places on net sell low cut under wear thats made for this-i dont remember the site tho.  if she goes alot try every half hour. good luck!

  4. They have the POISE pads. They look like regular pads for periods, but are made for incontinence. They are wrapped the same, so if someone happened to see them they wouldn't know the difference.

Regular pads do not work as well to soak up the urine and can leak.

Also, has her doctor discussed surgery for her? Talk to them. I know there is a procedure for this. Maybe have it done in the beginning of Summer so other kids don't know about it.

  5. you could always buy her diapers or goodnites they will help

diapers during the day and goodnites at night.

If she wants to wear diapers just let her she will grow out of it

  6. Depends makes a diaper that is very thin and may only hold one wetting. But for someone her age they might work. I think they are call like underbriefs or something similar. I had a friedn that had the same problem and thats what she wore. She just had extra in the nurses office incase she needed to change and it was very discrete. Yopu just need to sit her down and tell her see needs to wear one and let her choose ones that she may like better. I found the link of the diapers that my friend used for being at school and what not. also you can look at the other prodcuts that acan be used. http://www.depend.com/products/individua... Good luck
