I recently found out that my paternal grandfather's mother's last name (maiden name) was Robertson. My paternal grandfather's father's last name ends in -sen and he was born in Denmark. It is possible that my paternal grandfather's mother was Swedish or Norweigen, and if so, why would she have come to Denmark? I always thought that Danish last names ended in --sen and Swedish and Norweigen last names ended in --son that is why I am thinking that she came from Sweden or Norway.

  1. I believe Robertson to be more Scottish than either Swedish or Norwegian ! And maybe more Norwegian than Swedish !

Who knows why people travel from one country to another, it has always been so, the reasons are numerous.

  2. In reality, name spellings have to be used with a huge dose of salt.   What shows up in US records (after immigration) is only how it got put into the records, and most often, not by the person themselves.

An ending of "son" is not going to prove/ disprove a place of origin.. that is only proven from the documents with specific information.

  3. Names ending in -son (like Olsson) could be Swedish - Danish and Norwegian names of this type end in -sen. (Olsen, Hansen)

But that her name ended in -son doesn't necessarily mean that she was Swedish!
