..and I noticed that there are tiny little black dots all over the insides of the leaves. They're mainly on the veins, and don't wash off. I'm pretty sure it's not insects, but could it be some fungus? Is it still safe to eat?

  1. Bin the parts with black spots, the rest should be ok.

  2. I wouldn't, better safe than sorry, I live by the quote "when in doubt, throw it out" :-)

  3. my rule is:

if it smells or astes funky, THROW IT OUT

if it  LOOKS funky, use a ur own risk! lol

so, smell ot and aste it, its ms lkely fine=]

  4. If they look like little rust stains, then you can cut that part out.  That happens when you store lettuce too long, it starts to decompose.

  5. If you cut a part off the lettuce head and don't wrap it tightly to exclude air you will get those harmless (but ugly) spots on it. If you pull off the outer leaves that have them and slice off any part of the edge that has brown on it your lettuce will be perfectly edible and attractive to look at.

Some stores sell plastic knives that they recommend for cutting lettuce because they say that cutting the lettuce with a metal knife  will result in that discoloration. I don't believe that but people do buy those plastic "lettuce cutters" so someone believes it.
