  1. It is a poor analgesic, suppose to be an alternative to narcotics for pain relief.

Narcotics like morphine bind to the mu receptor, Tramadol has very weak mu binding ability, its pain relieve is due to inhibiting the re-uptake of neurotransmitters norepinephrine and serotonin(5-HT). (an iffy type of relief).

Its affinity for the mu receptor is 1/6000 th that of morphine, a metabolite is two to four times as potent as the parent drug. (If that is due to mu then maybe binding it is 1/1500th as potent as morphine, but to take an equivalent dose would cause fatal seizures or respiratory depression.)

It should not be taken with MAOI drugs as it might cause serotonin syndrome. Whether or not if mixed with other serotonin type drugs it could increase the risk of serotonin syndrome might depend on the individual (drugs like prozac, zoloft, or some headache medication.)

Hazards are that it promotes siezures, mixing with alcohol probably will increase the risk of siezures.

It really should not be prescribed as much as it is, real narcotics like codeine are cheaper and do not pose such an addiction risk that a drug that promotes seizures should displace more effective drugs.

  2. a centrally acting analgesic, used for treating moderate to severe pain.

In the UK it is a prescription only drug

  3. Tramadol (label Ultram) is a prescription analgesic (pain reliever), 50 mg tablets.  Combined with acetaminophen, (Ultracet), it contains 37.5 mg of tramadol.  As previous readers have stated, it is habit forming, a poor substitute for codeine (tramadol is a mu2) and lowers the seizure threshold (avoid SSRI's and MAOI's).  Consult your physician prior to usage.

  4. Brian is absolutely right, Tramadol is a pain reliever that acts like a narcotic, the 50mg is just the dosage.

Edit: To the guy above non-narcotic?, where did you read the book your sourcing?

Edit: Where can I buy that book, send me an email if you know, thanks.

  5. It is a moderate pain reliever that acts like a narcotic pain reliever by acting on certain nerves in the brain to control pain.

  6. Tramadol is a *narcotic* pain killer. It is one of the weakest opioid, and part of its analgesic effect is due to 5HT and NE reuptake inhibition.

  7. Tramadol is the generic for Ultram, a non-narcotic pain reliever for mild to moderate pain. Usual precautions are: not to be taken with alcohol or other intoxicating substances. Tranqualizer users need to take reduced doses of Tramadol. Side effects include dizzines or fainting, nausea, constipation, headache, tiredness, vomiting, itching, dry mouth and diarrhea. 50 MG is half the usual dose for those 16 and over, every 4 to 6 hrs. not to exceed 400 MG per day; Senior limited to 300 MG a day. Under 16: not recommended.
