Question:

I found this starfish at the beach and i was wondering what some information about it is?

http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/8097/dsc04836af4.jpg this is the link to a picture of it. Some surfer told us one or two of its legs were broken but they would heal, so we put it back. I just want to know its name, type of food it eats and other stuff

  1. This sea star is called the Margined Sea Star (Astropecten articulatus). ( http://www.jaxshells.org/wmf52.htm ) They are very common to the southeastern coast of the United States.

    Unlike a lot of sea stars who will pry open clams and oysters (then insert their stomach into the shell to eat the animal inside), Astropecten doesn't have the suckers necessary to do this, so they must swallow their food whole.

    They'll typically eat small shelled molluscs (with the shell still on).


  2. Starfish are the only known animals that have been said to have the ability to turn themselves inside out! lol strange but true!!!
