  1. I had exactly the same thing around a week after giving birth to my daughter, it really scared me as i wasnt told i was pass blood clots like that...I dont think there enough information given to women about what happens to your body after going through birth...

It's common to pass large and small clots of blood in the first few days after birth and then they usually lessen. The size of the clots can be anything from smaller than a penny to larger than a £5 note (the larger ones can be rather a surprise!).

Pains, caused by your uterus (womb) contracting as it tries to get rid of the clot, often precede the clot. Commonly they fall away when you go to the toilet, but sometimes they will be caught on your maternity towel. If possible, keep your towels for your midwife or doctor to look at.

The important thing -- regardless of how long it is since you had your baby -- is that, once the clot is passed, you do not actively bleed or continue to pass lots more clots. If this happens, call your midwife or doctor straightaway.

  2. Actually it is common for women to pass large clots after labor, but the doctors want to know because sometimes it can be an indicator of something else.

  3. No hun, that is not normal you are losing too much blood. When I had my son they told me if I passed clots bigger than a golf ball to immediately go in, and a baseball is huge! If your doctor says its ok, then get a second opinion, that just doesn't sound good at all!

  4. They just want to make sure that you don't have other symptoms with the blood clots. If the DR says you are OK then I would just trust him.

  5. I passed one about that big as well.  I was fine, but it sure felt wierd!
