I have central air (gas). It happened last yr also after the a/c has been running during the summer. You know once central ac goes on do not turn it off, program thermostat. The loud bang occurs when the system starts and stops. Thank You for your help.

  1. It sounds like something has come loose in your unit or the drive belt is old and needs to be replaced.have a hvac svs.man check it out soon. Before it dont bang no more. Good luck.

  2. If your a/c unit is outside. Turn it off at the breaker and take over the cover and hose it out good. It might just be something gross like a dead frog or simply a stick. If you have kids around it is hard telling what they might have stuck in there.

  3. The filter or coil is dirty.Check it out.Air pressure is what you're hearing and it happens because there's an obstruction to the airflow.I'm 90 something % sure.I've ran calls on that exact complaint many times before.

EDIT: If it sounds metallic or like a loud knock then Sean could be right,it might could be the compressor itself vibrating the copper tubes against something when it cycles on and off.

  4. if its real loud 9x out of 10 its the compressor
