I get compliments on my style and looks?

my fair share, I want to know when ppl give these compliments are they being genuine or are they laughing in their heads, ppl tell me Im pretty. (which I see average) I do take pride in my appearece, looks, persoanlity what have you I can see it too. but my family always treated me in a nasty way and said the nastiest things to me, when ppl compliment I brush it off, and no Im not fishing for compliments I get enough of it, I just want to know how do I start seeing what ppl see, and If I did would my attitude change. I feel pretty sometimes, but how do pretty people act

pretty is as pretty does.

why are looks so important and arent we all pretty in our own way.

can i tell u a little story about compliments? i once were like u - when i was in my teens. but after this story i stopped carrying for compliments, i brush them off, i rely only on mirror and my eyes. so here is the story: i always was complimented on my looks. so i was so proud of it (remember, i was a dumb teen). then once i came to my mother's working place. and there was this man in his late 40 i think. he was like ecstatic about how beautiful i am and all this kind of c**p. then he probably got tired and i went aside getting busy with smth. then another young girl entered. the same age as me - late teens, closer to 20. to my opinion she was as ugly as an elephant's butt. guess what this man told her? yes, correct, that she is the most beautiful girl ever existed on earth and all this blah blah blah. and girl was sooooo pleased to hear that. but believe me she was ugly. after that even i completely stopped paying attention to any compliments - i know there re absolutely abnormal people who want to be liked so they tell u anything - that u re a beauty queen and yada yada, but in reality they just want to be liked by u, that makes them feel better of themselves. and being a beatch i am i never give them that pleasure. sorry for the long story. i am 38 now, i still remember like it was yesterday
