Question:

I get excessive current on my amp when i turn it up i have a alpine 4ch 2components 2 4x6 rated at 4ohms ?

i have it wired each speaker to each channel is that how it should be wired

  1. if you have a multimeter you can try and do a little detective work

    check the speakers impedance by using the ohms setting on the multimeter  if they are reading around 4 ohms they should be fine

    the other things to check are the amplifiers live and earth connections are good  and nice and tight

    dissconnect the speakers from the amp and measure the voltage on the outputs of the amplifier  if its any more than say 300  millivolts the amp could well be in protection mode and require servicing  


  2. One speaker per channel is the correct way to wire it;  but the excessive current problem can be caused by other issues.  You may have a speaker wire that's pinched or grounded, or shorted against another wire.  Your component crossover sets may be mis-wired, or you may have a blown or defective speaker.

    You can try disconnecting the speakers, then re-connect them one at a time to see if you can isolate the problem in one speaker.
