I am so confused about what we should buy. I want a clear nice picture for movies . We'd also like to go 42'' or bigger. I have about 2000 bucks to work with. What is a good brand. What should I stay away from. Also, I'd like to stay away from WalMart

  1. Different type of TV will have different things to look out for. Spending $2,000 will give you all of the options. First, you have to choose between LCD, Plasma, or Rear Projection DLP. I will personally leave Plasma out of the picture due to its life spam (about 5-6 years) its color will start fading. Rear projection DLP will give you bigger size for the money (About 60" for $2,000), but you will not have the option of hang it on the wall. For LCD, 47" -50". No matter what brand you are getting regardless of LCD or DLP, 2 things I would look for to ensure its picture quality. Brightness and Contrast ratio. I would recommend tiger direct if you are buying online, for retail, I would recommend Frys Electronics or Circuit City. They all offer great deals sometimes. Hope this help.

  2. If 42" and up, and for mainly movies and not gaming, your best bet, and best buy dollar for dollar, is a plasma display. If you will be using a Blu-ray player, it's worth looking at a 1080p HDTV. If not, save a few bucks and get a 720p/1080i native resolution set.

Plasmas do not have a short life, as suggested by your first poster, who doesn't know what he is talking about. As for brands, the best dollar for dollar plasma, 42" and up, in both performance and reliability, is Panasonic, hands down!

You will come in way below your budget, with careful shopping. Type "plasma hdtv" in your Google or Yahoo search and you will get multiple sites to compare prices and specs. If you are a Costco member, the prices there are hard to beat on Panasonic.

If you should decide to go LCD, rather than plasma, look at Sony and Toshiba - but you will pay more for a little less movie performance. Stay away from any brands you have never heard of before, or associate with appliances or cheap electronics, rather than quality TV, such as Vizio, Ilo, Maxent, Insignia, Element, RCA, Westinghouse, Polaroid, and Sanyo. Good hunting.
