I have never had an issue reading out loud because i am a pretty good reader, but all of the sudden... School started this year and the teacher asked us to read out loud, I was very cool about it, but then as it got closer to me my heart started beating? I got nervous about getting nervous? if that is even possible... I tried to calm myself down. Then it got to me and I felt faint, and my heart was beating strong and i was reading and my voice came out frail and I was reading super slow with my voice cracking towards the end. I dont know why, but I get nervous about getting nervous now?!?!?!? I almost want to drop this class because everyday we read stuff out loud and its soo annoying. I dont know but when i have to present something thats not written I do fine.

Any suggestions?

  1. Sometimes try to tell your teacher what is going on.. Just try to pretend that you are the only one reading and you are the best reader.. Just pretend that you are better than everyone else.  FYI Nervous just means to me that you don't have the confidence to beat everyone even you know that you are the best reader.. You know that, your heart knows that.. Hope that helps you sorry if it is a little confusing..

  2. dont think about anyone else being in the room like your just by ur self or find out if u have to tell the teacher how nervous u get she might have some ideas to

  3. It might help to know that this is most people's number one fear--public speaking. It's normal to be nervous. Just do what you have to do despite the nervousness, and it will pass. If you let the jitters stop you, it may only get worse.

  4. Hi, I suffered exactly the same thing when I was at school so I really do sympathise..I had the added burden of going bright red which was very distressing! My way of dealing with it at the time was to hide away and just stumble through each nerve-wracking ordeal..believe me that doesn't work as you end up getting ignored, your potential overlooked and teased by your classmates. If I could go back to my school days, I would have taken action a lot sooner...try breathing techniques, they sound simple but they really do work. Everytime you have to read something out in class, prepare yourself up for it mentally by taking slow, deep breaths and concentrating on what you're reading, rather than the people in front of you. After a while, you'll forget your audience and will learn to relax a whole lot more and your reading-aloud technique should greatly improve. If this doesn't work, maybe give hypnotherapy a go. I haven't tried it personally, but I've heard it can be highly effective in tackling nerves/anxiety problems. After I left school I started going to drama classes and this was a turning point for me and really helped me to gain confidence and stopped the nerves. I wish I'd done something like that earlier. Maybe see if there's a drama group that you could join at school? Its lots of fun and you'll get used to performing in front of people without turning to jelly. Good luck, you'll be fine.
