I go to community college and this is my second year, I have a question about pell grants

The first two semesters of school I got about $1300 a semester (2 semesters). I applied again for the pell grant for the 2008-2009 school year and they only gave me $500 a semester.

I was told by the financial aid secretary that I would most likely be receiving the same amount because both my parents are deceased. The only difference between the 2007-2008 form and the 2008-2009 form is that last year I made only $11,000.00 and this year I made $19,000.00

There is no way I can afford school by myself, what should I do?

  1. You almost doubled your income over the course of one year.  This is why your pell grant went down so much.  If you did not save any of that 19,000 you made, your only other option is to take out a student loan.  Call the schools fin aid office and let them know, they will be able to tell you what paperwork you need to fill out so you can borrow and be very happy because you are getting 500 a semester of FREE money.

  2. the same thing happened to me...for some reason i got less money this yr from pell...i'm going to school to talk to my advisors about it...u should do the same...only they can tell u for sure...

  3. They did that because you made more money this year, so they figure you can manage with less.  (Shady, I know!  You might as well work less and have more time for studying!)  It does depend on how much money you have in bank accounts. The more you have, the more you are expected to contribute to your cost of school. Hide some money out of a bank account.

As for this year, you will have to apply for student loans or scholarships.  I'm sure you could be approved for scholarships because of your situation.  Go to the student services and see what is being offered at this time.  Keep checking back and signing up for new ones!  Also, Sallie Mae is a safe student loan for students and you don't repay until after graduation.

Good luck!  I wish you the best!
