And if 250 why do they reconmend this amp when you are under powering it?

How do you find out the RMS on an amp?

  1. From that amp. You would be getting 250 per sub.

According to the spec sheet. the optimum range is 200-400 watts. 250 isn't really under powering the sub. It's actually a quite respectable set up.

Don't let anyone tell you that under powering a sub will cause damage. Here's a good example. I compete in a 100 watt SQ class. I run 4 component sets and 2 subs off of a 4x25 amp(talk about under powering). I've been using the same subs for 10 years. JL 10w4-4s at 2 ohms each, the predecessor to the W3 series. No damage at only 50 watts each.

  2. Each sub would get 250 watts. The 500/1 is a very nice amp that will out perform many other amps of the same size or larger. JL audio does not give max power ratings on there amps or speakers. They just use the numbers that matter, RMS. Enjoy your new system. it should last untill your ready to buy a hearing aid
