  1. Biodiesel is better than fossil diesel because fossil diesel is digging up carbon that hasn't been in the atmosphere for millions of years.  That's increasing the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, which it's strongly believed is messing up the environment.

    Go to your kitchen and find some vegetable oil - any kind will do, corn oil, olive oil etc.  You notice the oil is pretty thick.   Biodiesel goes through a chemical process called transesterification.  Sounds worse than it is, you can do it at home.  It basically thins the oil so ordinary diesel engines are happier with it.

    It's also possible to design or modify the diesel engine so it's happier with thicker oil.  For instance a lot of big diesel engines are designed to run on a thicker oil called "bunker", they're happy with veggie oil straight-up.

    You can go to CostCo and price 5-gallon buckets of vegetable oil.  However it's interchangeable with regular diesel, so its price tends to get bidded up to correspond to regular diesel.  Not much cost savings, but biodiesel is better for your engine as well as better for the environment.  It's a good engine lubricant, which modern diesel fuel is not, and that makes injectors last longer.

  2. home made biodiesel is better for the environment because you are using a waste product in the form of cooking oil and converting it into fuel. Biofuels burn cleaner than regular petro diesel and aside from not driving at all, biodiesel is the cleanest thing out there.

    Its made by getting waste cooking oil, and filtering out the sediments. Then Lye (KOH) and methanol is added to form the actual biodiesel. There are alot of other steps involved, but Im not going to get into that here.

    Cost = ~$0.87 per gallon.
