  1. If your dvd player has got an hdmi socket, this might mean that your dvd player has the ability to upscale a normal dvd image into a high definition image onto your hdtv through a connected hdmi cable.

Your hdtv should have a number of hdmi ports on the back of your screen.

There are many excellent upscalling dvd players, from brands like oppo and denon, prices are also coming down very low aswell.

Then there's this new dvd system called blu-ray, which is similar to a dvd but has 6 times better quality than a dvd.

A blu-ray disk requires a blu-ray player and also an hdmi cable for maximum quality video output.

Blu-ray players also have an added extra of being able to play old dvd's as well as blu-ray disks, and can scale the old dvd's to high video quality.

And here's a very good hdmi cable

  2. You mean you have an HD TV and DVD player.  Make sure the DVD player says "HD DVD Player".  If this is the case you will HD DVDs.  You cannot use Blu-Ray.

If you have HDMI female connections on the back of your television unit and DVD player this does mean you will have HD DVD quality on your picture.

HD DVD is a technology and you must have a compatible DVD player to use the technology.
