Question:

I got Summons for Jury Service in my mail?

It says I have to respond within 5 days. The matter is that I am not an American citizen. In the back of this summons I have to answer a bunch of yes/no questions to determine if I'm eligible to be a juror. The first question is of course "Are you a US Citizen?". The problem is that if I answer "No", it says I have to write my Alien Registration #. What is that? I'm in the US with a J-1 visa. I just went to DMV to get a driver's license because I need a car to drive to work. I guess that's how the system found my name in DMV. What shall I do? Shall I call that phone #, or shall I ignore this summons, because it should not concern me anyway as I am not a US Citizen? What does usually happen when a person just ignores this paper?

  1. just tell the Truth...call and ask for the jury coordinator..he had already seen and heard everything

  2. call and explain the situation, they will tell you what to do.  Do not ignore it..you are in this country so you need to follow the rules

  3. you will get arrested.

  4. if you ignore the summons, then the court will issue a warrant for contempt of court. While it is unlikely that they will send out an officer to bring you in, the warrant will appear in any background checks that are performed on you.

This will make it difficult to maintain your visa, and should be detained for any reason, is, traffic stop, then they may decide it is time to bring you in.

It is best to answer the questions as best as you know how.

As to how you got into the jury pool, some state automatically register you to vote when you get a driver's lisence. Jury pools are selected from registered voters.
