  1. Take it again...and NEVER sign anything in the military until you've discussed everything and know exactly what you're doing.  Sounds to me like the recruiter is wanting to get you signed up then find a spot for you to fill.  Let them know exactly what you want to do.

  2. Your recruiter is supposed to be totally honest & upfront.  If he/she isn't, find a new recruiter and consider reporting the other one!  If you sing an open ended contract, you will have pretty much zero choice in what job you get...

  3. your recruiter has no bearing on what jobs you are offered.. you don't find out that until you go in to sign the contract.  you will sit down with someone who will give you a list of what is open that you qualify for.

At that point you either choose one, or you walk.

with a BARELY qualifying score( as in 35 is the minimum needed for marines with a HS diploma( you'd need a 50 if all you had was a GED)..you can't afford to be choosy.  you probably don't qualify for too many jobs to begin with.

  4. dont sign that contract till you know what Job you want, if you do or did already sign it, your job is based on the Marine corpss needs, if they need a cook, there ya go. if they need a janitor, there ya go.

As far as the recruiter goes, its less paperwork for him, now the marine corps has to find you a job and do the paperwork.  goodluck bro

  5. You're looking at it correctly.  In my experience, signing an "open" contract is not a good idea.  Insist on talking about specific jobs.  If the 35 isn't high enough for the kinds of jobs you want, hold off and take the ASVAB again.  I'd advise you to hold out for the Occupational Field you want... otherwise, you may just spend 4 years doing something you hate.  That is NEVER a good idea... and it won't give you skills you'll be able to use once your enlistment is up.

It's fine to just tell the recruiter you are not comfortable signing a contract that doesn't specify an Occupational Field... that you'd like to review the Occupational Field listings to see what the requirements are for the Occupational Fields and MOS's you're interested in.  Let him know you'll take another crack at the ASVAB to increase your enlistment choices, if you need to, but that you're not willing to sign an "open" contract.  He may bluster a little, but he'll respect you for it, and will understand you're doing the smart thing.

QUICK NOTE:  The poster above me said the USMC doesn't guarantee jobs.  That's not entirely true.   You can be guarantee'd an Occupational Field... but not a specific MOS (or job) within that field.  So you may qualify for the Aviation Electronics Occupational Field, but the specific job you'll have within that career field will depend on how well you do in A-school.   I believe most, if not all, branches handle enlistment in this manner.

  6. Because you are joining the Marines.

If you got a 35, and want to pick your job; join the Army.

If you want to be a Marine, join the Marines.

    Edit:

35 is not low.  21 is low.  11 is low.  7 is low.

If you did your best on the ASVAB, do not re-test.  You run the chance of losing the 35, and not even qualifying for the military.

I honestly don't know if you are being given the run-around or not, but most Marines I talk to have joined under open contracts.

I know a guy who processed for the Army with a 34, and he qualified for 41 jobs.

I would imagine that your 35 should qualify for quite a few different jobs in the Marines as well; its just a question of availability.

Finally, congratulations on passing the test!

  7. He is lying - if you sign any contract that doesn't have your job on it first, you are as bad off as your ASVAB score.  Your contract IS your for your job, so signing a contract that is basically blank is a bad move on your part and horrible on his for trying to get you to do it.

Your line scores may have been 95 on a couple of them but that has nothing to do with the 35 you got.  That is based on the 2 sections of english and 2 sections of math.  That shows your recruiter you are very weak in basic english and math skills so he is testing the water to see how stupid you are by trying to get you to sign a contract and THEN pick your job.  A line score is just one area of the test and that basically shows the USMC what jobs you may be naturally good at like electronics or mechanics.  These scores are not counted at all towards your ASVAB score.  He is going to scam you into some job you may or may not like by getting you to scam a signature before they discuss jobs with you.  By regs he is breaking the rules and you can call him on it in a second.  Tell him he is in violation of recruiting regulations and you want to talk to his senior chain of command.  You demand you are giving your job choices to choose from up front with no games.  You will then choose a job THEN sign your contract.  You better read your contract too.  Best bet also would be to no longer have any communication or contact with this recruiter unless you bring a parent with you.  They won't be so brave with mom or dad around.   You should have no problem getting a mechanical or driver job with your score but electronics requires a much higher score.  Good luck.

  8. 35 is low, I'd retake it ASAP, so you have more opportunities. DO NOT talk about jobs after you sign a contract, always talk before, because the Marines do not guarantee jobs.

  9. HE WANTS YOU TO SIGN BEFORE TALKING ABOUT JOBS BECUASE THE MARINES NEVER GARUNTEE YOUR JOB... YOU GO WHERE THEY WANT YOU TO... ITS A GAMBLE... YOU MAY WANT COMBAT AND WORK BEHIND A DESK... OR WANT TO WORK BEHIND A DESK AND GET SENT TO COMBAT.... NEVER GARUNTEED WITH THE MARINES... THEY HAVE "OPEN CONTRACTS" THE ARMY IS THE ONLY BRANCH OF MILITARY THAT GARUNTEES YOUR MOS(JOB) BEFORE YOU SIGN THE CONTRACT... WHAT YOU ASK FOR IS EXACTLY WHAT YOU GET.... DONT BELIEVE THE BULLSHIT THAT MARINES ARE THE BEST... THE COMMERCIALS LOOK GOOD AND CRISP BUT IN THE SAND PIT THOSE GUYS ARE NOT DOING IT CLEAN CUT... KILLING UNARMED WOMEN AND CHILDREN.... I SPENT 15 MONTHS AND A WEEK IN THE SAND PIT AND SAW ALOT OF FOUL **** FROM THOSE INFANTRY MARINES... AND THE THEORY THAT THEY SHOOT BETTER ISNT RIGHT EITHER... EVERY MARINE IS A RIFLEMAN.. THIS IS SO TRUE... HOWEVER THAT RULE APPLYS FOR ARMY AS WELL.. BEFORE YOU APPLY FOR ANY WEAPON YOU HAVE TO QUALIFY AS A MARKSMEN AND I QUALIFIED EXPERT WITH MY M16 AND MY M4... NUFF SAID.. YOU MUST QUALIFY TO GRADUATE BASIC TRAINING... IM PRIOR SERVICE 11B INFANTRY AND IF YOU PUT A MARINE IN MY FACE ID JUST AS EASILY SPIT IN HIS FACE AS HE SO CALLED WOULD DO TO ME BUT I GARUNTEE HE WOULDNT LIVE TO GATHER ANOTHER SPIT BUBBLE TO TASTE THE MRE HE JUST CHUMPED HIS FILTHY LIPS ON.... DONT DOUBT IT... I HAVE A RESPECT FOR MARINES AS FAR AS THEY HAVE A RESPECT FOR ME AS A SOLDIER... MY FATHER IS A RETIRE MASTER GUNNEY IN THE MARINES AND MY GRANDFATHER BEFORE THAT WAS IN THE KOREAN WAR... HOWEVER I KNOW THAT THE SO CALLED PRIDE OF A MARINE IS ALL A HYPE... YOULL HAVE PRIDE ALRIGHT... BUT YOU WILL NEVER HAVE MORE PRIDE THAT A SOLDIER IN THE ARMY THAT LOVES HIS OR HER JOB.... THERE ARE ALOT OF WIMP MARINES AND ALOT OF WIMP SOLDIERS... ALOT OF WIMP NAVY AND ALOT OF WIMP AIR FORCE BUT I GARUNTEE EACH BRANCH HAS THOSE INSIDE THAT WILL KICK THE DOG **** OUT OF SOMEONE IN THE OTHER... SO RESPECT ALL BRANCHES.. RESPECT EVERYONE..... (BUT TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION..... NO HE DOESNT KNOW WHAT JOB YOULL GET... THAT ISNT DECIDED UNTIL THE MIDDLE OF YOUR BOOTCAMP... YOU GO WHERE THEY NEED YOU.... THE ARMY LETS YOU CHOOSE SO WHILE YOUR IN BASIC YOU ARENT THINKING WHAT YOULL BE DOING AFTER BECUASE YOULL KNOW EXACTLEY WHAT TYPE OF ADVANCED TRAINING YOULL RECIEVE)..

  10. For the life of me I could not think of what job someone with a 35 ASVAB score would have the mental aptitude to do. It just hit me, I had a 99, after college I had to retake the test and I scored a 97.

Tell the recruiter a senior NCO said he was about twice as smart as the average officer and since your score is about half of his you think you would make a great officer. He will laugh his butt off. Then tell him honestly I did not do that well and I want to retake the test before I think about signing because I am only interested in the following jobs. Stay firm and let him know you really want to join but you also want a good job.

  11. Welcome to infantry

Did you really score a 35?

And I doubt most scores are above 95.  I had a 93 and that was higher than anyone I took the test with.

  12. Don't sign a contract unless it has your desired job on it. Don't fall for their c**p that you sign up now and later on we will assign your job..Its simple..When you sign a contract ensure it has your desired job on it..

And there are no dumb jobs in the USMC, only dumb attitudes who fill them. Being a cook in the Marine Corps is a whole lot better then not being allowed into the USMC becuase of whatever reason.

  13. how can you sign a contract without a job?

  14. Oh damnit, you're going into the Marines? Look, son, the Marine Corps doesn't need another "I got a 35 on my ASVAB but I refuse to accept that I'm dumb so let me go...uh...DUBBLE INTEL" guy. No offense, junior, but there are enough guys like you who refuse to better yourself but want better things for yourself somehow.

You're worried that the recruiter is going to make you a cook, but not something else that you'd like. I can say with 100000% certainty that is NOT the case! I will tell you that you have the right to talk about jobs, and I will also tell you that, as a Marine recruit, you are **NOT** guaranteed your job. Every other branch of service will allow you to pick your job, but NOT the Marine Corps. All you can do is request that MOS (job), that's IT. You are NOT guaranteed that job, and not only are you not guaranteed that job, you are also not guaranteed to be assigned to a job that lines up to your MOS! You could go through MOS school to be an electrician, but if your command needs someone in the Company Office, welcome to admin!

The Marine Corps puts you where it needs you. Not where you want to be, not even where you're TRAINED to be, but where ever they want to put you.

If you WANT a specific job, join the Army or something. The Marines will just s***w around with you and your 35. They don't promise you a rose garden and they don't promise you a job, either. All this info may sound harsh, but it's the truth. There's NO WAY you can guarantee any certain MOS for yourself. Sorry, son, join the Army.

  15. 35 PERFECT

pefect for the only job that matters F***n INFANTRY baby lol

hey bro i scored a 47 on my asvab and i still picked infantry **** the rest of that boring *** bullshit, and dont be a 88mike youll get blown the **** up, if anything be a mechanic or an engineer they blow **** up

  16. Definitely don't sign the contract until the recruiter has shown you your options and allowed you to make a choice.  You should always talk about jobs before you sign.  Good luck with the marines.

  17. having just graduated boot camp, I can say that 99% of the marines there that were open contract were extremely happy with their MOS selection. one person became a combat journalist of some sort but the rest were combat engineer, artillery, and infantry. If you decide to go open contract, just score well on the rifle range and on your PFT and you will be fine.
