  1. When can you put him in? Never. A 5 gallon is waaay to small of a goldfish. They make tons of ammonia/waste which kills fish. Do you know why so many peole say their goldfish is dying? It's because they put them in small homes like yours. Sorry if i sound rude, but it's true. Try a couple of guppies, they do not make as much ammonia/waste and can house 2 comfortably.

  2. you need to wait at least four to five hours...

I had a bad experience with not waiting long enough and my fish died....

  3. A 5 gallon tank is 15 gallons too small for a goldfish.  One fancy goldfish needs a minimum of a 20 gallon tank to grow properly.

  4. Never.

Goldfish need at least 15 gallons each. Let the 15 gallon tank cycle for about 2 weeks, put dechlorinater in and keep the filter running and the light on. Get the water tested at a local fish store, if it is perfect for a goldfish than put him in, if not wait a few more days. When it is ready you can put him in.

As for your 5 gallon, you can put a betta in>

  5. Unfortunately, you can't keep a goldfish in a 5 gallon tank.  The goldfish you see in stores are very young, and will grow very, very large--too large for a 5 gallon.  Most goldfish are only suitable for ponds.

If you have a fancy goldfish, you'll need at least a 20 gallon tank with very good filtration.  If it's a single-finned variety (common, comet, shubunkin), you need a 55 gallon tank at the very least, and a pond would be better.

As for cycling, it's very, very important.  Here's a page on how it works:

  6. Five gallons is much too small for a goldfish. They produce so much waste and ammonia that your water quality will be almost impossible to keep up with. Also, goldfish grow to be VERY large fish and keeping it in a 5 gallon will cause it's outsides to stop growing, but it's organs will. This will end in your fish's death. For each goldfish you need about 50 gallons or more for it to survive a long and happy life. A 5 gallon tank is only suitable for a betta fish. So if you haven't already purchased your goldfish I would highly suggest going out & getting one of those. They come in every color you can imagine & have beautiful long fins.

If you still want to put in a goldfish though, a 5 gallon should fully cycle in a few weeks. Just be sure to keep your filter on at ALL times.

  7. never tank is way to small for goldfish

  8. I agree with Mokey41. However if you feel you must put im in it goldfish are hardy fish. I would wait two or three days, however I always put my fish in right away cause I get too excited. But you are going to have to get a bigger tank really fast because a goldfish needs 20 gallons to himself. a)because they get too big and B) Because they are a dirty dirty fish.

    Good luck!
