  1. Well, me and my family recently went on a long plane flight and the week before I went out to best buy and purchased a portable dvd players. The little ones you can carry on planes and I brought along all their favourite dvds. They watched for hours and were very entertained. I also took colouring books, diaries, magic marker books, magnetic checkers and a small travel tic tac to. The most pricey thing was the portable dvd player but it was worth it. (:

  2. Everyone is suggesting portable DVD players and yes, I use them too for my three kids when we fly 11 1/2 hours transatlantically.

    Just some tips;

    -Get one with AT LEAST 5 hours playing time on the battery. It's rare that you can recharge these items inflight.

    -OR you can find out about buying a second battery and switching them inflight.

    -Bring the recharging wire and an adapter for wherever you're stopping so you can recharge it on the ground. Ask and make sure you can recharge if the electricity is different (I don't have a problem but do check).

    -Bring ALL the DVD's for the entire trip. Make sure she understands that she can't switch them around with local discs because the "zoning" where you're going is probably different. (or learn to de-zone them but I haven't figured that out myself ;)

    -Learn to turn the battery light to its lowest level to save battery life inflight.

    Same goes with any other electronical products. Bring the recharge cord and any adapters.

    I hesitate to recommend DS machines but they do keep my kids busy inflight. If she already has one, bring it but many parents grit their teeth over these Evil Objects. Their costly but are useful for travel!

    Other items that keep my kids busy;

    -small dress-up dolls, the kind with rubber clothes work well.

    -a new toy or quite frankly, just one she hasn't seen before.

    -any coloring items

    -stickers

    -books, get a couple of new ones you know she'll like.

    -puzzle and game books

    -cartoon books. Does she like Calvin and Hobbs? Keeps my son occupied for ages!

    Make sure to bring at least one change of clothes for her, extra socks or even slippers. Bring snacks, things that aren't too salty, greasy or sugary that can be packed easily without turning to dust.

    Don't worry about security. They're more interested in drinks. For those, wait till you're out of security and then buy them (overpriced but there's not many options).

    Here are the U.S. security guidelines (check with the relevant air authority but most are similar);

    http://www.tsa.gov/311/index.shtm

    If she'll accept to bring a sippy cup, take an empty one to use inflight to prevent spills, especially if you have the DVD player. If they're long gone, get some other type of drinking impliment (cup with spout, etc.) that she will use on board.

    Have her pack a backpack of her favorite things and you bring the suprises to give on board. Met them out during the flight.

    Make sure she knows what to expect in security, especially if it's been awhile since she's flown. They forget easily or rather, interpret things differently at different ages. This is a good page from the TSA website;

    http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/c...

    Just some points to cover on that;

    -Everything goes on the belt

    -no laughing or joking while going through

    -Explain she might have to remove her shoes.

    Explain too that she's going to see a lot of exotic and different people and to expect it and not comment on anything or anyone. Explain too that a lot of people understand English even if they're speaking something else. My kids fly between Europe and California about twice a year and I have to remind them every time to keep a lid on it.

    For the record, I've never used drugs to get my kids to sleep. I saw it done when I worked as a Flight Attendant and while it usually works, it can go wrong. Twice I saw kids go wired with them. The opposite or extreme affect is common in children. They also can wake up dehydrated and disoriented.

    Also, make sure you all get a good nights' sleep before your flight.

    Good luck!

  3. Give her some Benadryl =]

  4. juss brind a portable DVD player for her to watch movies or a laptop or sumtin.....bring sum kids books or magazines and PLENTY of dem for her to look at.....bring sum toys dat she can play with....nd since itz 20 hours ull probably b stopping sumwhere bcuz an airplane cnt go for dat long

  5. or you could just sedate her. j/k maybe a portable dvd player or a mp3.

  6. I think you mean 20 hours for two connecting flights, correct?  Because the current longest nonstop commercial flight is from New York to Singapore with a duration of about 18 hours 30 minutes.

    Invest in a handheld DVD player for your daughter and buy some of her favorite movies.  That way, even if the in-flight selection if not to her liking, she'll still be entertained.  Also, be sure to bring some of her favorite snacks with you.  But you'll need to buy them after clearing security.  And don't forget the she'll most likely be sleeping for several hours, as part of the trip is most likely going to be an overnight sector.  During your layover, try to do something interesting.  Maybe go to a restaurant and get a bite to eat, or go into some of the boutiques and buy a small souvenir.

    Good luck, and have a lovely trip! =]
