  1. I got the same thing. A receipt# but it's still pending. What I understood from my lawyer is that it means that you got selected. However, it doesn't yet mean you got accepted. Best way to find out is to contact payrol and ask if the USCIS cashed the checks which your employer sent for the application. Usually, they won't cash the checks if you aren't selected. If you're not selected by the automated picks, they will send the entire application with the checks back to the lawyer or employer. Still, I was told not to be too happy until mid June.

  2. it just means they received your petition but have not yet made a decision.

  3. If you get a receipt number, it's proof that your paperwork was not lost prior to being entered into the computer system. That receipt number is important and can be used to help check the status of your case.

1-800-375-5283 is the INS' toll free number in the US. You can call and get more details there.

  4. The receipt number is just that a number assigned to  your H1B case number. There is no lottery for H1B's. They are sponsored by companies and there are a limited number allowed in each year to the United States. You should speak with your employer, they can check the status of your employment and H1B status. You will have no status  until it is approved.

  5. Is there a step between being accepted and being selected in the lottery?
