and i was wondering when it would be normal for the swelling to go down. And also if it was normal for the swelled part of my lip to almost cover the backing.

try putting ice on it, it might help it go down.

next time you get a peircing put ice on it rigth after and it wont swell as much.

Expect it to take a week.

And yes, its normal for the swelling to cover the backing.

Just don't irritate the backing as much as possible, (though i know its new to your mouth)

and the swelling will go down a lot faster.

Also, take some aleve twice a day, it helps for swelling, and chew on some ice.

Ive had my lip pierced a few times!
