  1. Here is what is happening to you - the roadrunners you are using are simply too light to cast with a bait caster. the lure weight for most baitcasters is 1/4 to 3/4 ounces. You can cast lighter lures, if you go with light line,6-8 lb test, and have a light action rod, especially if you use one of the small baitcasters.

  2. Dane said it best.

baitcasters need a little more weight to cast efficiently. Small spinners. Trout, crappie and blue gill stuff just wont take the line out no matter how hard you cast, your best distance is going to be less than 15 feet or so. use the spinning gear for the small castable baits.

  3. Use you brake and spool tension to set the right release rate for your lure. I learned the hard way that you can't just use the same settings for every lure out there. I sue roadrunners on my baitcaster but have found out that it works better with a side arm cast and that I have to loosen the tension k**b and raise the braking speed. Give that a shot to see if it works for you.

  4. Increase the break settings, maybe use bigger brake blocks and practice its the only way, you need to add more tension on the spool with your thumb.

  5. what kind of bait caster? most of nowadays have an anti-backlash setting on them did you read instructions? if it has anti-backlash on it take what ever you trying to throw reel it up almost to top eye click bail and ease off on anti-backlash till your lure barely moves down and start there.it takes some practice but as you get better at throwing it you can back off even more but this requires using thumb presure to slow the lure down. just keep practicing and you'll get, it just takes time

  6. I only use my baitcaster with my heavy roadrunners. If you're using really light weight roadrunners you may want to use a spinning reel. Most baitcasters are made for heavier lures, but there are several that handle light lures just fine. Make sure you have your settings set appropriately, and if your reel is in fact one that handles light lures well, that should help you. You may also want to go with a lighter line if you're using 14lb. or heavier test line.
