Ok I got this betta like a few weeks ago and ever since ive had his gill has been stuck open, i didnt notice it at the pet store, but when i put him in his tank at home i saw it. He swims around a lot eats a tone and is very lively. I thought that his gill may be swolen but i researched it and its not red and hes not gasping for air and he acts normal...any ideas, i really want to cure it if it is a problem.

thanks a bunch!!

  1. Its probably not a problem, I once had a fish who's gill flaps are folded outwards, and the fish in question live a long and fruitful life.

So its probably just your fish's personality, love it, cherish it, and good luck!!!

  2. Well, I seriously doubt his gills are stuck open as its pretty much impossible. In the absence of other symptoms I'd say you could be seeing:

    1) "Beard" (flaring membrane) doesn't fold up properly, not to uncommon of no consequence to the fish

    2) Operculum (gill covering) could be folded. This can happen if it is damaged when flared open, it will fix itself.

  3. Bettas 'flare', they open their gill cover thingys, it's a display that they do when they're healthy/happy/angry.

  4. If the fish is not gasping or looking distressed he might just have a genetic defect. How do you filter his water? If you don't that might be part of the problem.Do you have him/her in a bowl? Most bettas can live in these conditions but don't like it nor do they thrive.I have a betta in a 29G aquarium and its one of the most peaceful fish in the tank.It really just depends on the bettas personality. If you need further help just send me an email.
