  1. Good question! Everybody is different. How are you trying to make his acquaintance? Try sitting with him quietly when he eats and talk to him in a low voice. Get a fishing pole type toy so you can play with him without getting too close (make sure you keep it out of his reach when you are through playing). Bribe him with a little baby food on your finger, mine all like Chicken baby food. If he didn't have much socialization when he was little it may take a long time for him to get to like you. You can do it though!

  2. I adopted a 3 y/o cat and she hid from me for a whole month before starting to come out, but she still didn't like me. It took about 6 months before she got really comfortable around me. Now, she lets me pet her, pick her up, etc. It just takes time and all cats are different. Be patient and let the cat progress at its own pace.

  3. I have noticed that all animals, and cats especially, like the person who do not like/want them.  I would ignore the cat.  Reading in front of it may prompt it to lie on your book.  Typing also works well in attracting them.

  4. Hello!

Congratulations on your new cat. Depending on his temperament, it will either be easy for him to transition to a new home, or it could take a lot of work. If his current home matches his last home closely, he shouldn't have any problems. However, if where he came from differ greatly from your home, you will have to give him a lot of time to settle in. Normally, a cat's curiosity will get the better out of him and in no time, he will be ready to explore and bond with his new family.

If you want him to bond closely with you, you have to make sure your are the primary provider. You have to assume the duty of being his food dispenser, play stimulator and litter box cleaner. Spend an appropriate amount of time in engaging him with interactive play. If he allows it, slowly pet him and the best time to get really acquainted is during meal times. Sit close by when he is eating and talk to him in a soothing voice. Encourage him to be near you and when he is soliciting attention from you, pet him and reward with a treat. Soon enough, he will associate you will all things nice and will be close to you.

I can't really answer this question with an exact time, but if you do the above things correctly, it shouldn't be too long now. :)
