  1. If you just got the filling in the last couple of days, it can be sore.  However, if it's an older filling, you should see the dentist!

  2. Did you get the filling today? If yes and the anesthetic wore off already, then I believe you should go back to the dentist so they can get it checked. This area between the gum and the tooth is very sensitive and also it depends on how deep the cavity was. You see if it was a deep cavity it gets closer to the nerve risking that it might get damaged during the process of restoration (I hope this is not your case). I am providing you with a link of tooth anatomy so you can see. http://www.cetnet.net/~q2/dr/school/ging...

The gum might be suffering minor trauma from all the work the dentist performed on it, you know it needs time to heel. But if you feel its more of the tooth you should go to the dentist. Just to let you know, if there is no apparent cause of your pain the quickest solution to this horrible pain you feel is a root canal. This is the procedure where the nerve is removed from the pulp (see pic) if the tooth is the problem it will resolve it quickly. Most likely if you go as an emergency case if the pain  continues and you return to the dentist. Also the root canal will cause you to get a crown once it is done. Usually a 2 day procedure depending on you and your dentist and the crown will take about a week to get there. (Price varies on location of the tooth and location of dentist) For now avoid eating on that side and give it time to heal (gums). You can try those oral-gels that numb the area for a short time as a quick fix. I hope your pain leaves I know its hard to do this but try not to think about it so you can live. I hope this helps. Hope your pain leaves soon!

  3. It depends....   If you just got it, yes, it's going to be painful...  Is it on a molar??  And if it's a silver filling, it's going to be very sensitive..  I got a white filling on one of my molars and the cavity actually went below the gum line..  It was hard a h**l for the dentist to fill and I was in major pain for the first couple days...  Now, it's been about a year and it still bothers me, I just haven't gone back to get it checked out..  I say if the pain persists for more than a couple days, make a follow up appointment and have it checked out, they may not have filled the entire cavity, which is what I think happened to me....
