Are you sure it's a quarter? There are gold dollars in circulation. Sacajawea is on one side of it. They are very similar in size. That's why they made it gold so people wouldn't confuse it for a quarter. If it looks like this it's a dollar. http://www.factology.com/sacajawea.jpg

several years ago right before they came out with the state quarters, someone got the idea of gold-plating the old ones for novelty sake.  Today even some of the state quarters have a gold plating on them.  I don't think your coin is gold through and through.  You probably somehow got hold of one of the plated versions.  A gold quarters was never issued by the US mint.
