It means you are not allowed to leave the house until he says so. A couple of days could be anwhere from 2 days to a week, maybe longer.

There may also be other consequences involved in this grounding ie loss of privilages, or extra chores etc.

Depends.  It could mean you are grounded from going out, or from electronic devices, or both.

When we do teenager groundings here it means you don't leave the yard unless you are with a parent AND you lose use of all electronic devices (such as phone, cell, iPod, computer) until your punishment is over.

it depends why im grounded. i get grounded from tv, shopping, computer, phone. sometimes i get grounded 2 my room for a bunch of hours. the worst is having 2 sit on a chair in the kitchen for 1/2 or 1 hour, it like timeout, embarssing at 13 i know

It means that you when you come home from school, all you're allowed to do is homework, chores, and maybe read a book. You can't go out with your friends, you can't watch TV, and you can't go on the computer.
