What is a good size for a surfboard for a beginner?

Im thinking about 7', I dont wanna board that will be to big, but will do good for when i get a bit more experienced.

I took some lessons, and fell in love with it.

Also what would be better, a rounded or pointed tip?

Is there any other suggestions?

I about 5'1 and 105lbs if that helps..

  1. Seven feet is good for you. Try that!

  2. I am really glad to hear you started with lessons. Lessons are usually the best way to start, unless you are an adolescent or young adult with lots of pals who surf who can teach you. Go to a real surf shop. The folks there can hook you up with lessons, and even rent you a board to learn on. Just work on your basics, and after you feel good, then, think about buying a board, but don't rush into anything.

You need a board that will float you well enough for you to take off (paddle and catch a wave). Most people learn best on long boards, although I have seen lots of surfers start on a short board and master it. Long boards are ideal for learners. There are also good intermediate length boards to learn on, funshapes, mini-mals and some hybrids.

There are NO RULES for learning how to surf.

Don't take your surfing advice on line. Go to a surf shop, where people who ride the same breaks that you will can give you advice on the right board for your size, skill level and local conditions. I know a lot of nice young folks will send you answers, but trust me, go to a good surf shop for the right answers.

I have been surfing for 42 years. It is the greatest stoke of all. Just learn the 'right way', and you'll have fun for life.

  3. seven feet is good i started with 7 feet also, a rounded tip is better for beginners, but when yu become more advanced you switch to pointed..

    have fun!
