I got a rope caught in a jet ski intake. Can I get it out myself or do I need to take it in?

  1. You should be able to cut it out yourself, but you have to be very careful.  The jet could kick back without warning.  A 8' long blade works, just cut anywhere you can until you get the jam cleared.


  2. You can try.

    First, remove all the spark plugs. This will prevent the engine from accidentally starting, and also release compression making it easier to turn.

    Then, if you can find and end of the rope you may can just pull it out. It will rotate the engine backwards as it comes off the shaft. You may need to unbolt the intake grate on the bottom of the ski as well. You can also remove the shaft cover inside the ski and turn the shaft backwards.

    Use a razor knife with care if needed, but use caution where the shaft enters the hull. You don't want to damage the seal. Also, be sure all the rope is off the area around the seal before starting back up.

    If you ate a lot of rope, it is possible you damaged the impeller, or bent the shaft. If the ski doesn't run right after removal, you will have to go to the shop.
