I live in NY and work in NJ and my accountant (who isnt very responsive) did my taxes this year. I got almost $800 return from NYS - aome time after that I got a bill for $1,000 from NYS and a letetr that said I need to resubmit a form that I was missing (required for ppl who live in ny and work in nj) along with a new filled out return -- my accountant said she already sent that form and in fact it was in our copies, so she said all we need to do is send them the copies of everything which we did. Now, almost 2 months later, I get a warrant sayign I need to pay asap with interest and penalties accumulatign daily, I cannot get a loan, etc until this is resolved. Why did this happen? Maybe they didn't receive my papers the last tiem they were sent???

They take alot of of my paycheck so this is weird..

  1. Sounds like your CPA is not doing a very good job for you.  Normally these things can be resolved over the phone.  At least so direct communication will tell you what it is they are looking for.  Most states have direct lines for Tax professionals and the CPA should be able to handle this with ease.

  2. THis sounds like your paperwork is being sent to the wrong place.  I would call the office sending the payment notice, get the correct address, and have your accountant send it again, certified mail.

  3. If you paid a accountant to do your taxes she needs to get this cleared up for you.   I would contact a number on the letter and state you had a accountant do your taxes and paperwork was sent and ask them what you need to do next and explain your situation and I'm sure if you owe the money they will work with you and take payments.

  4. Your accountant should handle this, not you. Most professionals who handle taxes have policies stating that they will handle everything if any issues arise regarding your return, or if you are audited. She needs to be more proactive, she is the expert on this. And when it's resolved, I'd find a new tax person ASAP.
