  1. A visa must be valid at the time a traveler seeks admission to the U.S., but the expiration date of the visa (validity period/length of time the visa can be used) has no relation to the length of time a temporary visitor may be authorized by the Department of Homeland Security to remain in the United States.

Persons holding visas valid for multiple entries may make repeated trips to the U.S., for travel for the same purpose, as long as the visa has not expired, and the traveler has done nothing to become ineligible to enter the U.S., at port of entry.

At the time of entry, Arrival-Departure record is issued. It is known as I-94. The actual period of stay is stamped by the ICE agent at the time of entry at the airport. The period of stay is dictated by such stamp which is guided by dates on your approval notice for H1B.

  2. You must be an engineer, scientist, or a programmer.  This type of visa is given by the US dept. of labor to Univeristies. This type of visa is typically a 3 year although it can often be extended for up to 7 years (If you have a spouse they need an H4).  In your particular situation, it looks as though you can begin travel on 8/11/07 until 8/11/08.  That is the time you must begin your use with the H1b visa.  If you try to being your position on 8/12/08 you will be DENIED...your position must be open before then.
