I got fish yesterday and my tank is cloudy?

i have 3 neons, 3 guppies(2 males and a female), and 2 mollies(male,female).(10gallon)

First, how do i tell the gender of the neons?

And, second, my tank is cloudy?

Is there a reason?

I don't have a screen in my filter yet, it didn't come with one, I'm getting one tomorrow, will that fix the problem?

or is there something else i need to do.

I want a sasfe enviroment for my fish.

  1. its cool tanks do that when u start them if it still like that in a week then thats not good

and yes u can when they get older

  2. well you should have put the rocks for the tank and washed them before putting them in and let the water settle before putting in the fish...but to late but dont freak

  3. It is hard to s*x neon tetras, but generally in sexually mature neons, the females are larger, rounder, and fatter. From above, the female appears wider. There is also a theory that the stripes on males is straighter than on females.

As for the cloudy water, if you have just set up the tank recently then it is cycling. The cloudy water will clear up after about 5 days. I don't think putting a screen on your filter will help, but it won't hurt either. Your tank will take about 5 weeks to finish cycling, so DO NOT do any water changes before then otherwise it will interrupt the cycling process, despite what some previous answerers have stated. Also, if you used tap water (water that you get from your sink or something that isn't bottled water) you must add dechlorinator drops to the water so it won't harm your fish.

  4. well here is the good and bad news for you but first there is no way to s*x neons

now the important stuff first off for a new started tank you have to many fish in it right now and you will be very luck if you don't lose any here is the deal a new tank has to go thru a cycle process this is the process where the tank builds up good bacteria in order to break down excess food and fis waste so it doesn't harm the fish a lot of folks will tell you to do this with out fish I do it with fish all the time but it takes a lot of paying attention to the tank and testing the water for ammonia

the cycle process goes like this excess food and fish waste turn into ammonia as it decays ammonia is the number 1 killer of fish in new tank setups so you have to test for it daily sometimes 2 or 3 times a day when you have fish in the tank

if the ammonia level gets above 1.0 you do a 25 to 50 percent water change with out touching the gravel

as the ammonia builds the tank buildes a bacteria that turns the ammonia into nitrite another harmfull item for fish but not near as bad as ammonia

then the tank builds up another bacteria that converts nitrite into nitrate which is fairly harmless to fish

during this cycle process your tank will get cloudy but when all is said and done the tank will clear up

do not use chemicals to get the water to clear up it is a waste of money

during the first month or so test for ammonia regulary and do water partial water changes anytime the ammonia is over 1.0

any time the fish are all at the top like they are gasping for air do a imeadeat 50 percent water change then test for ammonia in this case it is more important to do the water change than anything

to help keep ammonia level down feed only every other day for the first month or untill tank has cycled

you will know when tank has completed cycleing when ammonia and nitrite go to 0

  5. Sorry can't help you with the gender but I believe yor water is cloudy because you need to add that Chlor-out stuff, what kind of water did you put in there? Otherwise you put too much in.

  6. your tank is cycleing, hence why its clody. do SMALL water changes daily, it willl be done cycling in a few weeks.   your female guppie will die soon if you dont get more females... you need two females to every male, the males will fight for the female and eventually she will die. sorry i dont have much eperience with neons...

  7. Your tank is cloudy becuase that's what happens when the nitrogen cycle first starts.  It's one of the first signs.  I think you should google "Nitrogen cycle" and learn more about how to safely establish an aquarium.  Here's a good website with helpful information:  http://www.fishlore.com/NitrogenCycle.ht...

Buy a test kit and monitor your ammonia and nitrite and nitrate levels.  Since you haven't cycled your aquarium, there is no nitrogen-eating bacteria to stabilize your tank and eat the ammonia produced in your fish waste.  Ammonia and nitrite can be lethal to fish, so they are at high risk for dying right now in this uncycled tank.

    What you should do:

    1.  Buy a test kit for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate

    2.  Test your water every day

    3.  If ammonia raises to a dangerous level, do a 50% water change.

    4.  After a week or two, your nitrogen-eating bacteria will establish and you'll notice a stability in your ammonia levels.  They should drop to zero all the time.  After that point, you may drop down to doing only the standard regular water changes that all aquarists do.

As to the genders of your fish, I'm not going to google that for you.  Just go to google and type in "sexing tetra" and you'll get it.  Here, it's this easy:  http://www.fishpondinfo.com/neon.htm#s*x

There, I googled it for you.

  8. The cloudiness in a new tank is called "bloom".  This is the water adjusting itself and starting to reach the good bacteria balance.  Don't change your water, this should last from a couple of days to a week or two....sometimes it goes away and then comes back.  Don't worry, this is a good thing!!  Here is a site that will help you with questions on your tank, fish, etc:

  9. firstly did you cycle the tank

secondly neons need to school in groups of 6 ore more

also what do you mean a screen
