I got my Stimulus check today,but wrong amount. Why?

Hello,,i was wondering,i received a letter from the IRS last week saying i should be getting my Stimulus check on 6/6/08.And that i would be getting $588..Now of course it did'nt come on the date stated but did come today..But it was not $588 only $459.61 which is crazy in itself..I mean how screwed up are these people..They send a notice telling me i am getting a check for one amount. It dos'nt come on the day they say,,an then when it does come its another amount..Just wondering if anyone else has had these problem with there check..I am married an my wife and i file separately..And she got back $582 which is what they said she would get..So my question is why i would'nt get what i was told..thanks

First off they mailed it on 6/6/08. If you read the statement.  Also if you read the statement you could receive up to the amount of $600.00 Once again the operative word reading.

Did you owe them money?  If so they will deduct back taxes owed.....

Good question - is it possible that the other $100+ went to pay off something you owe, like back taxes, child support or defaulted student loans?  If you had any of those, all or part of your stimulus check would be taken toward what you owe.  If that's the case, you'll get another letter telling you what it was taken for.

If you don't owe. You can do an amendment. Go to the person that do your taxes, Take the letter stating the amount letting you know what they say you was to get. Take all of your 2007 tax papers. We had to do the same. I owed and am a homemaker, Husband has the only income so the money is his not mine.
