I got my parakeet(un-named) and he his very quiet and likes to stare at himself in his mirror. I have several toys in his cage(not cluttered) and just everything! I did all my research on them but... now I don't know what to do now. I want to get him to step-up onto my finger, but he's still scared.

  1. Just give him time, let him become accustom to his surrounding, talk to him real soft & sweet & A lot!....I have a 12 year old B&G macaw that I am pretty much in the same boat you are...But mine just bites HARDER! :)LOL

I loved my parakeets!  they where always so sweet!

I would just give him time and everyday just get alittle closer to him

  2. It would have to get use to the environment first. You can follow up by letting it out to play with the windows closed. When it is standing on its cage, you gently thrust your finger towards its chest and say 'up'.

It will step onto your finger and do this several times.

  3. 2 pts yay

  4. Give him a day or two to adjust to his new home. Talk to him in a real quiet voice and show him all his toys. Its good to make a big deal out of is toys, saying ooooooh and ahhhh. They notice those things and then will develop interest in them. After a day or so, you can try to slowly put your hand in with a finger out and say step up and gently push your finger against his belly. dont expect him to learn it on the first try. he may try to bite you, and if so just wait a few and try again. Make sure to give him lots of treats and good quality food and clean water every day. Dont feed him just seed or food- they need fresh veggies and fruit. Mine love apples, peaches, corn, cooked green beans, and ESPECIALLY cooked white rice. Hope this helps you to get started. Oh also- they LOVE music. Play music for them!

  5. It isn't a good idea to handle him right away, he's scared and doesn't know where he is and he needs some time alone to get comfortable and know that he isn't in any danger. What you should do first is to give him a week to get used to his new surroundings; make sure there's nothing loud around (like screamy toddlers or hyper dogs) that will startle him and that he isn't right next to a path of major traffic (where people appearing and disappearing constantly as they move throughout the house will startle him), and give him his space except to give him fresh food and water, and maybe talk to him a little at the same time. After he's had time to settle down then you can start getting to know him.

  6. i did same thing i also got one and mine did that get him out and play with him and  let him get used to the enviroment he is quite because might be scared
