  1. it depends if you are married to a UK national or if you obtained it some other way. If you are married then you can apply after 3 years and if you obtained ILR some other way then you can apply after 5 years. In both cases you need to have spent at least 1 year here with ILR. You will also need to show proficiency in English and that you do not have criminal convictions or debts. the grant of citizenship is not automatic and is not a right. you also need 2 referees with British nationality. It is discretionary and you must meet the criteria. The fees for the application are now also a problem as they were increased last week to £680 for an adult application. I am an immigration solicitor.
