The hinges on my back door were squeaky, so I WD40'd them. I didn't realize that the way the door is hung, the door wants to drift shut, and the only way to keep it open is to prop it with something. This is a hassle and I'd rather have a squeaky door than a door that constantly wants to shut on my heels when I walk through it. Is there any way to make the hinges stiff again?

  1. You could try washing them with liquid dish detergent and a tooth brush and rinsing with hot water.

  2. pound out the hinge pins. then lay them on a hard surface and strike them with a hammer to slightly bend them. not too much cause the pin has to be able to go back in. this tightens the hinge and should make it stiffer. also while you have them out wipe off the wd 40.

  3. wipe all the excess off the hinges eventually it will go back

  4. Spray them with some ammonia. That will cut the oil. Or you could install an automatic door closer that would enable you to keep it open. They're about $8.

  5. The only thing I can think of that may work is stripping the WD40 off with something to make it stiff again.. maybe paint thinner?

  6. put some gum on it.. or something sticky

  7. spray it out with water, eventually, it'll be squeaky again. Why don't you readjust the door and maybe the door frame?

  8. friction is the reason for the sqeak so if you want that "problem" back I'd suggest you wipe the excess oil & put a little salt water on it . However if you want to fix the problem w/ no sqeaks , use a small piece of cardboard  behind one of the hinges as a shim . you may have to experiment w/ the hinges until you shim the proper hinge.
