  1. You could get a fish.  They perform better in smaller waves than the performance type surfboards.  So much of it depends on the local breaks where you'll be surfing.  I'd talk to local surfers or someone in a surf shop.  They should be able to guide you.

  2. you can "stand up" on a foam board and you want to know what you should get.......how about getting---better.

i'm sure you could go talk to the guys at the local shop---they will guide you in the right direction. i am willing to bet that after talking to you for 5 minutes about your sufing, they will tell you the same thing i am. dont get me wrong, i'm not trying to shut you down or anything, but you have to walk before you can run, right?

    nothing wrong with progressing slowly.

  3. Since foam boards are usually pretty thick and wide i would suggest a 6'4-6'6 fish. It will paddle closer to a longboard and perform like a shortboard.

  4. Go to a good local surf shop and talk to the folks there who know the wave conditions lots better than we do. Also, don't rush into buying anything until you have had a chance to try a couple different types of boards (rent them or borrow them from your friends who surf). Do not waste you money with anything on line, and stay away from Chinese made popouts. remember, TRY before your BUY. Don't decide one type of board looks cool, but you can't ride it after you have paid a lot of money for it. Go to a good local shop, where they will help you get the right board for your size (weight/bouyancy ratio), skill level (beginner) and local wave conditions.

Check some of the resolved questions in Yahoo Answers _ "Surfing" and you'll see what I mean. I have been surfing since 1966, and I take my questions to the experts, at a good local surf shop.

And, buy a decent board, not a Chinese made popout.

  5. like the surfboard man said, i would get a 6'4-6'6 fish. i am 5'6 and i ride a 6'4 shortboard and it is great. hope this helps

  6. Go to a shop and talk to them.  A fish might be a good choice but a 6'4" fish would be HUGE.  I'm 5'8" and ride a 5'9" fish but I probably could have gone even shorter.  Think of the difference in size for shortboards and fish as like the difference between ski size and snowboards.  Different ride so different size.
