So I was siting next to my Mum in the passenger seat, she started the car and it made a funny noisr, like she was revving the engine really really hard, so I said I thought she had the handbrake still on; so she puts the car in drive (it was in park) and then suddenly without her actually pressing the pedal the car just whooshed forward straigh onto the roundabout (which is about half a meter high), she managed to turn but the brakes weren't respondiing so we couldn't slow down and we were going really fast, so we crashed into a couple of barriers, then a lamp post, then a huge tree that ended up stopping us. The engine continued to run for another couple of seconds, then it stoped i'm not sure if it's because Mum took out the key or just because the tree was in the way. The whole thing must of taken like a minute, and we ended up only moving like 50 meters up the road, even though we zigzagged all that way.

What I'm wondering is why the car suddenly started moving of it's own accord, and why the brakes stopped working? The steering was fine, but the car was intent on going at about 50km an hour, with no one pressing the pedal. Could it have been and electronical glitch? And has this ever happened to anyone...anyone ever heard of something like it...?

  1. Whoa that's too bad! is everyone ok? I've never heard of anything like that! Sorry it happened that must've been so scary!

  2. sounds like the throttle or throttle position sensor was stuck your brakes should work still but the gas was going full throttle so it wouldnt do much

you can still shut the engine off and the emergency brake should still work

  3. The throttle cable got stuck or the throttle assembly is very dirty and got stuck or she was pressing on the gas instead of the brakes......

  4. What car was that???
