  1. It depends on the abnormality.  If it was low grade doctors can choose to do a biopsy to confirm.  Since you have tested positive for high-risk HPV they are probably going to want to treat the infection, and there are a few options for that, cryotherapy, etc.  In some instances the biopsy alone is therapeutic.  If it is high grade they will most definitely do a biopsy and possibly a LEEP procedure.  Leep is "loop electrosurgical excision procedure", which is used to cut away abnormal tissue on the cervix.  This must be done in order to prevent the infection to spread or become more severe.

Irregular pap smears are common.  I get, depending on the day, 1-6 low grades per 80 cases.  I also get quite a few ascus.  Many women are infected with HPV.  So you are not in a small group.  You just happened to develop something on your cervix that we can identify and a doctor can treat.  There is no treatment for dormant HPV infection, and no reason to treat when there is no abnormality.  Hope this helps.

  2. Your Pap smear is sorta a two part test.

The Pap smear looks for abnormal cells of the cervix...the second part of the test the HPV test confirms that you have a high risk HPV type.

Monday your doctor will probably be doing a colposcopy.  This will give the doctor a better look at your cervix and he will be able to biopsy anything he see that doesn't look right.

The website will help you Understand Cervical Cell Changes the treatment you doctor may recommend.  Understanding a little more about this will help you ask good questions on Monday...remember that many women do build immunity to their acquire HPV type.

  3. Irregular pap smears are common. I have them, my sister has them, my boyfriends mom has them, and so does his sister. Both of my best friends have also had them. You will have to go back for a pap smear every 6 months after 3 regular pap smears you can go back to just having them once a year. After you have your colposcipy you might have to have leap procedure done where they go in and remove the abnormal cells. If your body doesn't get rid of the cells on there own. I highly suggest having someone go in with you while you have both the colposcipy and leap procedure done if they are going to do them. It was a scary and nerve raking thing for me. I had my mom go with me to both of them. If you wanna talk more about the leap procedure or colposcipy you can email me. I can tell you what to expect. good luck and I'm sorry to hear about your irregular pap.

  4. It is possible for a false positive on a pap smear, however as far as how common I am not sure.  If you have HPV you have an increase in chance for things like cervical cancer, although whether or not that is what is causing your positive only the doctor will know.
